Masala Khichdi

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Rice (White or Brown)
  • 1 Cup Toor Dal
  • 1 Medium Onion (Red or White)
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paster
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 1.5 tsp Coriander-Cumin Powder
  • Pinch of hing or asafoetida
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 Cups water

Preparation

Soak rice and toor dal for 1 hour.

In a pressure cooker add oil and let it heat up. Add mustards seeds and let them crackle. Once they crackle, add hing and chopped onion with ginger-garlic paste. Add salt so that the onions get cooked. Once the onions are cooked add the soaked dal and rice. Let the rice and dal fry a little with the onions. Add 4 cups of water with the dry spices and cook until 3 whistles. Once cooker is cooled, hot khichdi is ready to serve.

If cooking in an electric pressure cooker, use the rice mode.

This dish can be enjoyed with some yoghurt or kadhi.
