For outer covering:

  • 2 cups maida flour (all purpose flour)
  • 2 tsp warm oil
  • water to knead the dough

For filling:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1.5 cups desiccated coconut
  • 1.5 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 or 2 pinch grated nutmeg (jaayaphal)
  • 3/4 cup water


With the ingredients mentioned for the outer covering, make a smooth dough. Cover and keep the dough aside for 20 minutes.

Now mix all the filling ingredients in a pan. Cook on a low flameĀ  till the mixture is cooked whilst continuously stirring. Let the mixture cool.

Take a small ball from the dough and roll thinly in to a circle of about 3-4 inches diameter. Add the filling in the center and pinch the edges towards the centre as shown in the picture. Deep fry the modaks in medium hot oil till they turn golden brown.

Fried modak is ready to serve.
